Located on the mainland opposite the Peninsula Hong Kong, Kowloon district has always been a status somewhat apart. At the time of British rule ( Everyone knows of course the famous Beijing Convention of 1960 and its terms, I do not believe it .... ), the city of Hong Kong is found under the yoke of rosbeefs.

China then keeps the Kowloon district under the elbow, from the ground, check that the English are not too anything. Ensue nearly a hundred years of urban development, and although British control at the edge of the Second World War the entire Peninsula Hong Kong, Kowloon city is relatively indifferent to them. After all, it is only dilapidated and abandoned buildings, and the area has little of interest. In addition, it is still a Chinese province, which neither the English nor the city of Hong Kong can claim. The walled city is a curiosity and attraction for tourists and colonial, where you can see "the remains of the old China" in Hong Kong, and remained so until 1940.

4
Because of the lack of regulation there were virtually no health and safety awards.

Many of the buildings had no direct access to natural light or fresh air.

6
Small businesses still flourished within the city.

The city may have looked like chaos from the outside but the people inside lived just like everyone else.

Photographer Greg Girard said it was sad to see the Walled City finally demolished in 1994. “Every city realizes too late to start caring about their architectural heritage… by the time you start caring about it, it’s too late to save it.”

As as Kowloon city began to attract the interest of artists, architects and journalists, its existence becomes increasingly inappropriate for China. This "historical error" is now seen as a beautiful foirade that the government is committed to rectify. In the early 1990s, it launched a major program of relocation and financial compensation with the locals. In 1993, after tough negotiations, the last inhabitants were evacuated. Before final demolition, a group of Japanese explorers takes about a week to travel in the desert walled city, establishing a kind of map and a section of the city.
